Kosher consumers rely on master oversight lists compiled by umbrella organizations or neutral rabbinical courts.
The top three most reliable, universally accepted master lists of recommended kosher agencies are:
1. The AKO (Association of Kashrus Organizations) Member List
AKO is the global governing umbrella organization that unites the world’s major Orthodox kosher agencies. Because an agency must meet strict, baseline administrative and halachic (Jewish law) standards to even be admitted as a member, the AKO Membership Directory serves as the ultimate international master list. If an agency is a full member of AKO, it is universally considered a baseline reliable organization.
2. The cRc (Chicago Rabbinical Council) Agency Directory
The cRc list is widely considered the gold standard for everyday consumers. Unlike the OU, the cRc functions heavily as a regional rabbinical court (Beis Din) and explicitly publishes a public, highly detailed “Directory of Kosher Certifying Agencies.” They categorize hundreds of worldwide symbols into “Recommended,” “Not Recommended,” or “Recommended Only for Specific Products.” Because it is continuously updated and easily accessible via their app, it is the most frequently cited list in North America.
3. The KosherQuest / Rabbi Eliezer Eidlitz Master List
For decades, the standard independent consumer database has been KosherQuest, run by Rabbi Eliezer Eidlitz (in conjunction with the Kosher Information Bureau). It functions as a massive, cross-referenced master list of worldwide agencies. Like the cRc, it breaks down international symbols by region and explicitly states their reliability status for mainstream Orthodox consumers, making it a vital reference rule for looking up obscure global symbols.
The “Big Five” Baseline: If you aren’t looking at a master list but just need to know the most universally trusted agencies on packaging, the industry relies on the “Big Five”: the OU, OK, KOF-K, Star-K, and the cRc (Chicago). They all share reciprocal recognition, meaning they fully trust each other’s standards.
